THE GIMPLS’ TRAVELING ORCHESTRA
This brass and violin project is dedicated to the music of the eastern Lublin region. The band’s formation was inspired by a long-standing story told by singer Anna Malec about the Jewish band Gimplów – musicians from Biłgoraj who, a hundred years ago, traveled with their music through the surrounding villages and towns, setting up a portable dance floor and playing for the crowds to dance to.
The musical core of the project is formed by musicians from the Tomaszów Lubelski area and their music: Ignacy Bednarz, an outstanding violinist who plays with brass bands, and flautists led by Antoni Bednarz. Other inspirations include orchestras from Dzierążnia, Majdan Górny, and the Kimaka band from Wola Gródecka.
Gimple is road music, performing concerts in places where local melodies have long since ceased to be heard. The orchestra recreates them from fragments of memories, guessing what they might sound like today. This is a musical journey in an orange Autosan, which began with a week-long train and concert tour between Chełm and Tomaszów Lubelski in July 2024.
But above all, it is a meeting with what has passed, and what, perhaps, still has a chance to return.
The Gimpls’ Traveling Orchestra will include:
Filip Majerowski – tuba
Marcin Chrzanowski – tenor saxhorn, trombone
Emmanuel Levy – trumpet
Krystian Dąbrowski – trumpet
Jakub Korona – bass drum
Franciszek Stalenga – accordion
Ewelina Prokopiuk – soprano saxophone
Honorata Depta – violin
ESKAPADA ORCHESTRA
Eskapada Orchestra is a brass band that was formed in June 2025 at the Cultural Center in Lublin, as part of the National Center for Culture project “Eskapada – Brass Journeys in Time and Space”. The band consists of brass and woodwind instruments, including tubas, trombones, saxhorns (tenor and alto), trumpets, saxophones (alto, tenor and baritone), clarinets, flutes and oboe, and the rhythm section consists of a drum with a cymbal.
The orchestra’s repertoire draws from the rich tradition of brass bands in the Lublin Roztocze region. The program includes polkas, oberkas, travel tunes, tangos, waltzes and foxtrots.
The band is open to new members – both beginners and experienced musicians. Those interested are invited to contact: mkkabat@gmail.com
The project is co-financed by the state budget, with funds awarded by the Minister of National Education as part of the Our Traditions program.
