LATVIAN CLASSICS

A unique opportunity to see the classics of Latvian cinema. Janis Abele, who is a part of this year’s jury panel at LFF, has selected 5 favorite films from his country. The selection is organised in cooperation with the Latvian National Film Center.

White Bells, dir. Ivars Kraulitis (LSPR) 1961, 24’, 15+

It is morning and the streets get busier and busier in Riga. Among roaming people, a little girl notices some white bells in a florist window. She can’t afford to buy the flowers she wants, so she sets out to find them.The White Bells” is the first film attributed to the famous Rīga School of Poetic Documentary Cinema.

 

Motorcycle Summer, dir. Uldis Brauns (LSPR) 1975, 70’, 15+

On his 18th birthday, Māris receives a motorcycle from his parents. While driving around with his friends, they pass a wedding car with Inese, the bride entering a loveless marriage. She allows Māris to “steal” her from the wedding reception to take a romantic ride. After two nights spent together, Ines unexpectedly disappears. Maris decides to find her.
