HISTORY IN CINEMA/HISTORY OF CINEMA: WALERIAN BOROWCZYK

In 2023, Walerian Borowczyk would celebrate his 100th birthday. He is known as a controversial artist, but considering his versatility, trying to classify him seems pointless. We want to introduce him to the Lublin audience as a total, uncompromising artist whose rich achievements include many works that deserve recognition.

ONCE UPON A TIME… A FEW WORDS ABOUT WALERIAN BOROWCZYK’S WORK

Recognized by the world as one of the “cinema greatest”. In Poland, his homeland, he had the status of persona non grata. A visual artist who, together with Jan Lenica in the second half of the 1950s, made a real revolution in the perception of animated films. A total artist who, in his extensive film work, moved from animation to live-action films, balancing
between the surrealist, absurd cinema and the artistic erotic cinema. Piotr Kardas will talk about Walerian Borowczyk’s work.

Piotr Kardas – graduate of film and new media studies at the University of Łódź. The originator and main organiser of the O!PLA National Animation Festival, Rising of Lusitania – AnimaDoc Film Festival, as well as the projects: Animation Across Borders and O!PLA FOCUS ON POLAND (O!PLA ACROSS THE BORDERS). The initiator and program director of the CRAFT International Animation Festival in Yogyakarta. The coordinator of the Polish edition of StopTrik International Film Festival. Curator and juror at Polish festivals and abroad. Constantly cooperates with festivals and cultural institutions all around the world.
