HISTORY IN CINEMA/HISTORY OF CINEMA: JERZY KAWALEROWICZ
In 2022, Jerzy Kawalerowicz would celebrate his 100th birthday. Simultaneously, next year would be the 15th anniversary of his death. He is one of the most recognizable Polish filmmakers. To commemorate this outstanding movie director, we have prepared a retrospective of his work. Piotr Kotowski, who is the curator of the program, chose 3 canonical titles. We will present all of them in digitally restored versions.
Mother Joan of the Angels, dir. Jerzy Kawalerowicz (Poland) 1961, 103’, 15+
A monastery in the Polish borderlands in the 18th century. The prioress, Mother Joan and the other nuns are possessed by demons. The authorities of the order send a special exorcist, Father Suryna, to the monastery. A strong and rapturous feeling bursts out between him and Mother Joanna, to which they both do not want and cannot admit. The film was awarded at the Cannes IFF.
