FOCUS: BORDERS – Three Loves

Focus: Borders is a competition dedicated to medium and feature-length fiction, animated, and hybrid films distinguished by a strong authorial voice and a search for original ways of telling stories about the contemporary world. The diversity of approaches to long-form cinema presented in the selected works proves that film still has much to offer. This year’s competition features 8 titles.

Three Loves, dir. Łukasz Grzegorzek (Poland) 2025, 100’, 18+

He loves her, she loves him, he loves… Well, who exactly? A seemingly trivial flirtation connects Lena – about to turn 40 — with Kundel, a law student, and Jan, an influential lawyer who also happens to be Lena’s ex-husband. What appears at first to be an innocent situation, soon becomes the prelude to a tense and uncertain game, where desire, love, and obsession intertwine, leading the three characters into unexpected places.
In his latest film, Łukasz Grzegorzek explores a dynamically shifting love triangle. In a tone reminiscent of Pedro Almodóvar’s most twisted films, Grzegorzek creates a story that is, at the same time, a bit humorous, ironic, kitschy, and dramatic. But also, thanks to Weronika Bilska’s elegant cinematography, remains deeply sensual and captivating throughout, almost erotically so. “Three Loves” deftly escapes genre categorization, balancing somewhere between a social dramedy, campy satire, and even an erotically charged thriller. Grzegorzek isn’t afraid to experiment with form and narration, and the result is another distinct, authorial work that reaffirms him as one of the most original voices in contemporary Polish cinema.
Film awarded at Gdynia PFF and presented at e.g. New Horizons IFF.
